Thornhill Police Station has recently been closed after being deemed surplus to requirements by Police Scotland. The building was identified in the Thornhill Place Plan as a possible location for community led housing. It is a beautiful building which reflects the unique architecture of Thornhill and Old School Thornhill Development Trust (OST) believe it should be redeveloped for the benefit of the village.  We are currently exploring options to purchase the building and accompanying garden space. We hope to develop the site and breathe new life into this important building in the village, while helping to address identified local needs in housing and childcare.  We understand that there is a need for more affordable housing in the village and have evidenced this more concretely through a Housing Need and Demand Assessment survey (HNDA) undertaken by South of Scotland Community Housing (SOSCH) in 2024. The survey demonstrated a demand locally for both smaller and family-sized homes. In addition to the homes, we are also exploring the possibility of using part of the building to accommodate a nursery business which could provide wrap around childcare. This has been identified as a need within the village and was highlighted in the Thornhill Place Plan.  We have commissioned local architect, John Murray to undertake a feasibility study for the building, which includes developing plans for how it could be brought back into use while working within its existing form. The layout option being explored includes a three-bedroom house and two one-bedroom flats. We would now like to hear the views of the community about this proposal.
